Frequently Asked Questions

How does BirdDex identify birds?

BirdDex uses AI to analyze your photos and suggest the most likely species. The AI shows you its top matches with confidence percentages so you can pick the correct one. It works best with clear, well-lit photos where the bird is visible, but it can often identify birds even in imperfect shots.

What if the AI identifies the wrong bird?

The AI isn't perfect — it gives you its best guesses, but you make the final call. On the species selection screen, you can scroll through the suggestions, search for a different species, or mark the photo as "Unclassified" if you're not sure. You can also change the species later from your Photos tab.

Why did I get fewer points for my photo?

Points are calculated based on the species' rarity and conservation status. Common birds like House Sparrows earn base points, while rarer or threatened species earn multiplier bonuses. You can see the exact breakdown on the "Photo Added" screen after each identification.

How do species levels work?

Each species has its own level based on how much XP you've earned photographing it. The more photos you take of a species, the higher your mastery level grows. Your overall Birder Level reflects your total progress across all species.

Can I upload photos from my camera roll?

Yes. Tap the Camera tab, then tap the gallery icon to select existing photos. You can upload photos one at a time or use batch upload to add multiple photos at once.

What birds can BirdDex identify?

BirdDex can identify over 10,000 bird species worldwide. The AI works best with North American and European birds but can recognize species from any region.

How do I delete a photo?

Go to the Photos tab, open the photo you want to remove, and tap the delete option. Deleting a photo will remove the XP you earned from it.

How do I delete my account?

To delete your account and all associated data, go to Profile → Delete Account. This action is permanent and cannot be undone.
